ASSOC. PROF. PIYA SAMANKATIWAT
Thailand’s First Cardiothoracic Surgeon to Lead HeartMate 3 Artificial Heart Implant in 2016
Assoc. Prof. Piya Samankatiwat has been at the forefront of surgical implantation of long-term left ventricular device (LVAD), congenital heart surgery development and thoracic organ transplantation in Thailand. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (Second-Class Honours) from Ramathibodi Hospital in 1991 and holds postgraduate board certifications in General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Family Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine.
Assoc. Prof. Samankatiwat joined Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine in 1998 and was appointed Associate Professor in 2012. Internationally trained, he earned an MSc in Surgical Science from Imperial College London and completed a one-year fellowship in paediatric cardiac surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2003. Renowned for his clinical expertise and academic leadership, Assoc. Prof. Samankatiwat has served as Deputy Director of the Queen Sirikit Medical Centre and currently acts as Deputy Chief of Surgery at Ramathibodi Hospital. He has been a dedicated educator for over two decades, teaching congenital heart disease and cardiothoracic surgery at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is a member of several professional organisations, including the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (both national and international), the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, and the World Society for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery.
Assoc. Prof. Samankatiwat’s research interests include complex congenital heart surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, thoracic organ transplantation, and surgical simulation. With over 25 peer-reviewed publications, he remains a leading figure in advancing cardiothoracic surgery and surgical education in Thailand and the international community.
